Description:
A rather exotic sampler-style design featuring a lunette-shaped tropical
sunset scene with silhouetted palm trees. Rows of specialty stitches,
both pulled and cut-work and some over-one stitching create a design that
is both a treat for the eye and interesting to stitch. The design utilizes
regular floss, overdyed floss, overdyed pearl cotton, several weights
of white pearl cotton, metallic "Ombre" fiber, and seed beads...all
in shades reminicent of the lovely island of Bermuda, which inspired the
design!
Background Information:
This design was originally created for The Bermuda Guild of Stitchery's
Spring Workshop, which took place April 2 - 3, 2004. Since
I hadn't previously travelled to Bermuda, doing reasearch for this design
was a "virtual" vacation! I devoured travel guides, visited
on-line sites and read all of the books I could find to get a sense of
how to portray elements of this lovely semi-tropical island. I
am forever a fan of this beautiful place and the friendly people who live
there: I had a wonderful visit and hope to return some day!
Stitching Comments:
This piece was designed to appeal to a wide spectrum of stitching
interests and abilities. While it's relatively small, it is surprisingly
challenging. The design is stitched on a fairly large-count fabric, which
in itself is a challenge of sorts: this design really needs to be secured
in a frame of some kind and *not* stitched in-hand. The large variety
of specialty stitches should hold the interest of the most seasoned stitcher.
Along with floss, the design utilizes several weights of pearl cotton
and a heavier weight metallic fiber called "Ombre" (manufactured
by Kreinik)...
you may want to consider using a fiber aid like "Thread Heaven".
An introduction to the techniques and stitches used in Tropical
Dream can be experienced by stitching the teaching piece I designed for
the same seminar: "Tropical
Daydream". It can be found in the "Complimentary
Designs" section of the website.
