Description: This small sampler features some rather unconventional winter colors, including an overdyed silk thread called "Winter Woods" (#010) from Gloriana. The design is heavy on specialty stitches and and over-one stitching. The focal point is an old-fashioned ice-skating scene. There is also a section of cutwork with dove's eyes accented with beads.
Background Information: Over the years I've received many requests for a series of smaller seasonal samplers. Winter Sampler is the second of the series. The sampler was inspired by the colors of winter in the northern Pennsylvania mountains.
Stitching Comments: Miniature Winter Sampler is a challenging piece, but since it's small, it's a project that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. I'd recommend using a stitching frame to maintain even tension as many of the specialty stitches benefit from fabric held at an even tension. Also, the cutwork sections are more easily worked if both hands are free. It would be an easy matter to change the overdyed fiber color to fit your own color preferences: simply choose one that compliments the floss colors used in the design.
Specialty Stitches: attaching beads, plaited Algerian stitch, herringbone stitch, four-sided stitch, cutwork, hemstitch, rhodes diamond stitch, lazy daisy stitch, diagonal and regular satin stitches, algerian eyelet, long-armed cross stitch, dove's eyes, knotted clusters, beaded rice, various eyelets.
ERROR: There is a typo in the Materials List on the last page of the pattern: The Gloriana number is incorrectly listed as #101. It should be #010. The color is correctly listed in the color code, however! The typo will be corrected in future printings of the design.
