Description:
A small sampler-style design featuring a sandcastle by the seaside, a
short poem (backstitched over-one), and a sea dragon playing in the waves.
A decorative border featuring shell motifs, specialty stitches, beads
and metallics finishes the design. The entire piece sparkles just a bit...like
a sunny day at the beach.
Background Information:
This design was originally created for a stitching retreat sponsored by
The Lazy Daizy
(owned by Sarah Haynes) held at Myrtle Beach last February. (I taught
along with Jennifer Aikman-Smith of Dragon
Dreams, and Karen Weaver of Black
Swan Designs). The theme of the retreat was called"Castles
by the Sea", and I was inspired by that to create a design which
recalled some of the memories people have shared with me about their childhood
visits to the seashore. (Unfortunately, I didn't visit the beach until
I was an adult!) I've always felt that the sea itself is magical...and
could easily accommodate the friendly sea dragons that inhabit childhood
dreams!
Stitching Comments:
This design is fairly small, and stitches up fairly quickly. It has
lots to hold your interest: a bit of floss blending, some fractional stitches
and some over-one, a little blending filament for sparkle, some beads,
and a few specialty stitches. For those stitchers not "into"
fantasy, the design can easily be adapted by leaving off the dragon bit
of the design, and extending the border to enclose the poem (or maybe
you'd like to use different text). Since the border is a series of repeat
motifs, it would be relatively simple to make the changes needed.
Pattern Errors/Corrections/Clarifications:
none.
