Description: A melancholy Pre-Raphaelite-style mermaid reclines upon a rocky, wave-battered outcropping. The wind tangles her long auburn tresses, and a stormy dawn sky casts an eerie glow over this fantasy scene. A shell-and-wave motif border finishes the design. Background Information: I'd thought about how I would design a mermaid for years before I attempted it. The inspiration for this piece came from sources too numerous to list, but the main influence was the work of the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood: especially Rosetti and Waterhouse. The dream-like quality of the piece was achieved by striving for realism, yet placing within that "realistic" setting a totally imaginary being, herself rendered as realistically as possible. I think the phrase is "...the momentary suspension of disbelief".
Stitching Comments: This piece is fairly complex because of the many blended floss colors, and the over-one section. This portion of the design (over-one) should be stitched after all the over-two stitching has been completed to insure correct placement. Although the chart is computer generated, the symbols for the over-one section are quite small, and the chart is a pull-out that is folded twice. Specialty Stitches: None Important Tips: Charting Technique, Organizing Floss
